I read books like a chain smoker, one right after the other and often during moments of intense stress. Inevitably, whatever I’m working through surfaces as repeating themes, ideas and connections in the works themselves. It’s like divining tarot for maladaptive readers.
These are what I think of as my book synchronicities: The uncanny way that unrelated books, whether fiction or nonfiction, pulp or literary fiction, begin to rhyme and together build a framework of understanding within me.
It’s the reason I can never give straightforward book recommendations and why I’ll give “Charmed” as deep an analysis as “Caliban and the Witch.” They all have a piece of the idea. I rarely read new releases and mostly wing it at the library when choosing new books.
My favorite authors include Octavia Butler, Ottessa Moshfegh, Lauren Groff, Ursula LeGuin and Silvia Moreno Garcia. I’d say my tastes consistently fall in the “unhinged woman on a tear” category. I’m a sucker for nonfiction that reads like a novel. I also love the films of Gina Blythewood-Prince, Guillermo del Toro and Martin Scorcese. Music literally synchronizes and it’s the extra does of magic to really bring a theme together.
Synchronicities are also not limited to books. For example, Sam Shepard’s play “A Lie of the Mind” illustrates what Richard Avedon’s portraits of the 1970s American West are also getting at.
I intend for this to be a place to share some of my essays on my favorite synchronicities across media. Eventually I’ll include reader comments, once I figure out how, but you can contact me here. And the other thing is that I just miss blogs! The relatively low-stakes of sharing your niche interests on a corner of the internet where the people who align with it can find you was a genuinely fun time! Where did it go?
Here’s to diving deep and the art that makes us feel! Come back for more and find me @booksynchronicity on social in the meantime.
